Chief Medical Officer & People's Physician
Dr. Karani Munuswamy (31.12.1962 – 31.05.2026) was an eminent medical professional, humanitarian, and public leader in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Famously known by the public as the "Praja Doctor" (People's Doctor) and the "Mambattu Doctor", he broke institutional barriers by wearing a simple traditional dhoti while rendering clinical care. His accessibility and simplicity endeared him to thousands of rural families who could not afford expensive private healthcare.
He is survived by a dedicated medical family who continues to uphold his legacy: his wife, Dr. A. Padmaja, and his son, Dr. K. Prabhat Kiran. Together, they maintain the free pilgrim kitchen and community medical initiatives he founded.
Dr. Munuswamy joined the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, in 1994. Recognizing the vital need for structured trauma response, he dedicated himself to the Department of Emergency Medicine from 1997 onwards. Over his 32-year career, he rose to the position of Chief Medical Officer (SAG), leading the emergency department with absolute sincerity.
On October 1st, 2003, during the historic Alipiri bomb blast, Dr. Munuswamy was the lead emergency physician who personally attended to the Honorable Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu Garu, and MLA Sri Chadalawada Krishnamurthy. He supervised their critical care and emergency treatment until their complete recovery. For his lifetime excellence, he received a Meritorious Certificate from Hon. Minister Bojjala Gopala Krishna Garu on Independence Day, August 15, 2002.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Dr. Munuswamy refused to step back. Operating in the high-risk environment of emergency medicine, he rendered exemplary duties 24/7 without taking a single day of leave. He was officially awarded the "COVID-19 Warrior" Appreciation Certificate by the Director-Cum-VC of SVIMS. In recognition of his extraordinary career, he received the Republic Day Appreciation Certificate in 2025 as Chief Medical Officer.
Deeply connected to his roots, Dr. Munuswamy served as the President of the Yadava Sangam in Tirupati. Recognizing that community development requires a central gathering space, he mobilized local philanthropists and successfully constructed the Yadava Samajam building in Tirupati, providing a venue for educational counseling, marriages, and community welfare programs.
True to his medical calling, Dr. Munuswamy served the public until his very last breath. After completing a grueling night duty shift on May 30, 2026, he went directly on May 31 (Poornima) to supervise a community Annadhanam (feeding) program.
Just five minutes away from his destination, his vehicle suffered a back tyre blowout, crashing into a neem tree. As a doctor, his first instinct was the safety of others; his final words to his friends were, "Are you alright?" Upon hearing their confirmation of safety, he closed his eyes and went into a long sleep. His passing triggered a massive week-long outpouring of public grief, cementing his memory as a true national hero.
